Professor Sir Vaughan Jones (1952-2020)

It is with deep regret that the London Mathematical Society (LMS) has learned of the death of Professor Sir Vaughan Jones on 6th September.

Sir Vaughan was a highly distinguished mathematician.  He received the Fields Medal in Kyoto Japan in 1990 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in the same year. In 2002 he was appointed Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to mathematics and in that same year became an Honorary Member of the LMS.  In 2018 he was named an Honorary Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.

New Look for Society Home Page

You may have noticed that our website home page has changed a bit recently. We’ve kept Dr Nicholas Schmitt’s beautiful ‘twisted pseudospheres’ image, but we’ve updated the layout of the page to make it easier to use and less cluttered. In particular, we hope that the new design allows users to navigate quickly to the content they need, such as guidance on how to apply for a grant or submit a paper. We’re still working on a couple of further refinements, like making the Society’s logo appear as sharply as possible on the page and improving how the page appears on mobile phones.

Levelling Up Scheme

Thanks to a generous donation from Dr Tony Hill, the аĿª½±has started work on a new venture to support the provision of online tutoring for A-level Mathematics students who come from backgrounds that are under-represented in the mathematics community.
